We really cannot think of a better way to describe Kelly Condera than to reflect on the name of her Brand- she is truly an Artist with Soul. Earthlover Shopping has enjoyed offering a selection of Kelly's beautiful hand made jewelry for the last few years, and each piece is always received with such joy and praise- if you think the photos are beautiful wait until you see the real thing! We asked Kelly to help us out with some questions, to help you get to know her better as an artist and a person. Here's what she had to say:

How long have you been involved with your craft

I have always enjoyed creating and I have been designing jewelry since 2002. There are so many unique and exotic components available and the challenge of combining these with an endless variety of colors, shapes, and textures into a single harmonious design is something for which I have developed a passion.

      2. Where does your inspiration come from?

I have always found enjoyment in even the smallest things and I think this excitement and natural curiosity about the world around me is what ignited my desire to create. I love life and I am continuously inspired by everything around me which can easily be seen in my bold and earthy jewelry designs. The tagline for my designs is “jewelry with soul” and this is exactly what I strive to attain with each piece of jewelry I make. I think people need more beauty and inspiration in their lives and I hope to be able to respond to the unique beauty in each individual through my expressive and soulful jewelry designs.

      3. Can you tell us about you , and your background?

I grew up a military brat so I moved around all over the place including Spain which enabled me to travel to Africa and Italy and other parts of Europe where I was continuously inspired by new and different experiences. In the states I lived in Texas, Virginia, Florida, Colorado and I went to school in Tucson, Arizona at the University of Arizona and lived in different parts of the state for about 8 years. But I eventually came back to Virginia Beach which I love and call my home as that is where I spent the biggest part of my childhood and there is nothing better to me than waking up at the beach every morning. I have been inspired by all of these experiences and I learned to love change and still crave it today. I think the desire for new and different is what makes me have a constant need to create. My children, now 8 and 10 are constantly growing and changing and also a constant source of inspiration to me.

      4. What are the Eco Friendly aspects of your jewelry?
Most of my materials are natural. I know that the majority of resin I use is from Indonesia and is a cottage-industry there where the whole village takes part and it is their main source of income. Most of the nuts and seeds and shells I use are from the Philippines and they are all natural materials from their island. I use quite a bit of bone and it is either from Kenya or the Philippines and it is carved from cow and water buffalo bone which is a by-product of other industries so it's helping to eliminate waste and use every part of the animals. I use quite a bit of African brass which is handmade mostly in Ghana, Cameroon and Nigeria and they reuse metals and melt down Maria Theresa dollars and other metal items to create the crosses and other metal pendants. I use tagua nuts from the tagua palms in Colombia and coconut from palms in the Philippines. And all of the gemstones are naturally mined from different parts of the world and specifically I use quite a bit of turquoise from Arizona which is all natural.

HISTORY of the "Bolga" Basket

Internationally known as Bolga baskets, the baskets are exclusively woven by the indigenous people of a historical town in Northern Ghana called Bolgatanga. Bolgatanga literally means soft soil, rocky land.

Weaving has been a traditional skill of these people over the years. The geographical land area of Bolgatanga is not fertile enough for extensive agricultural activities. Coupled with an erratic rainfall pattern and generally harsh weather conditions, handicraft activities such as basket weaving, leather work and pottery are undertaken mostly by the women to supplement their incomes from the subsistence of farming activities.

The original Bolga basket was woven round, without any form of handle. The ends of the straw were left untrimmed. It was used basically as a sieve in the brewing of a local alcoholic beverage called pito. Pito was, and is still, an important drink during such occasions such as funerals, marriage ceremonies, festivals, naming ceremonies and at other important social gatherings.

With a population of about 225,000, only 10,000 people from 19 communities possess the basket weaving skill in Bolgatanga, which has been passed on from generation to generation in the community. Today, the Bolga basket has become an object of tourist attraction. With different forms, designs and colorful patterns, the basket is loved for its unique designs and colourful patterns. There have been several attempts, particularly by some Asian countries, to imitate the Bolga basket and call them African baskets. However, just like all other imitated products, the Bolga basket is differentiated from the non-authentic ones by its rigid body due to the use of the straw of the “veta vera” grass (locally called elephant grass) against the flabby imitated ones made from sea grass.

RAW MATERIALS USED

THE STRAW
The straw is the main raw material used. It is obtained from a tropical grass locally known as elephant grass, with “veta vera” grass being the technical name. The grass grows along the banks of rivers, streams and swampy areas. The straw is not simply cut from the grass. The grass grows, matures and tussles just like wheat. The straw then tussles with a broom-like flower at the top, maturing by growing longer and bigger. The straw is then harvested by holding a stem with the left hand and the husk that encloses the straw with the right hand and pulling it down, leaving the husks on the grass for further tussles. The flower at the top of the straw is cut off near a nib using the forefinger and the thumb. This is done to every single piece of straw. The straw is harvested wet, then sun-dried, and becomes ready to go through the weaving process. However, some baskets can be woven with the wet straw, but these do not have the quality that is associated with the baskets woven with the dried straw.

THE WEAVING PROCESS

SPLITTING
The straw is first split into two halves by biting every single piece in the middle at one end with the teeth to open it into two. The first half is held by the teeth and other half is pulled down with one hand. About half an inch to the end of the straw, the process is ended. This is to make the next step easier. This process is done to every single piece of straw that is to be used in the weaving process.
TWISTING
The split straw is wrapped together in a wet sack to keep it wet and prevent it from breaking during the twisting process. The split piece of straw is then twisted by rolling the two halves together. Traditionally, this is done on the weaver's thigh. However, today, a piece of bathroom sandal is tied against the thigh for the rolling process.
UNTWISTING
The two pieces of twisted straw are separated into two individual pieces. This process depends on the type of basket the weaver intends to weave. Untwisted straw is used for weaving double weave baskets and the twisted straw is used for single weave baskets. The round baskets are mostly done in double weave.
SELECTION OF STRAW
Different lengths and thickness are best used for different parts of the basket. The weaver carefully selects the appropriate straw for the different parts of the basket. The ability of the weaver to select the most appropriate straw goes a long way towards the outcome of a good basket.
DYEING
Different methods are used in preparing the straw for dyeing. Some wrap small amounts of twisted or untwisted straw into rings whiles others tie together large bundles. A pot of water is brought to boil and the dye is added. The straw is then submersed into the solution and pressed down by the weight of big stones. The straw is boiled for between 15 to 20 minutes. For bright colored baskets, the straw is first dyed yellow, allowed to dry and then dyed again with the preferred color. However, baskets which do not need color (natural colour baskets), the straw is not boiled.
STARTING THE BASE
The actual weaving process starts with the base of the basket. Several pieces of twisted straw are used in the first line-up, brought together by another straw, which looks like and octopus or spider with several legs. The leg-like strings form the the vertical ribs of the basket. The weaving is done by passing the horizontally placed straw in and out, around the ribs. For double weave baskets, there are two horizontal straws which go through the same pattern. Double weave baskets are much stronger and consume more straw than single weave baskets.
THE RIM
Once the body of the basket is completed, the rim is added. First, the legs are tied into a knot at the top of the basket. Next, the remaining pieces of the ribs are laid flat around the rim. If the remaining pieces are too long, they are trimmed to size. A piece of straw is used to systematically tie the ribs down into a uniform ring around the mouth of the basket. The rims are usually in the natural colour of the straw. However, there are other forms of baskets where the rim is woven flat.
THE HANDLE
There are several styles of handles. For round baskets, the usual handle is two-legged at both ends across the mouth of the basket, and fusing into one in the middle, serving as the hand-grip. For oval shape baskets, the handles are two, placed on opposite lengths of the basket.
TRIMMING
Trimming involves the cutting off the remaining ends of the straw on the body of the basket (both in and outside of the basket). If this process is not carefully done, the basket will be rough when the fingers are run over the body. Double weave baskets are easier to trim than single weave ones, hence they are nicer, stronger, more flexible and smooth.
LEATHER HAND-GRIP
Weavers do not add leather to the handles of the basket. It is the option of the buyer to put leather hand-grips to reinforce the handle to make it last longer, or as a form of decoration. The leather is obtained from the hide of animals from the slaughter houses. The animals are not killed just for their hide. The hide is sold out to other artisans who put it to various uses.

It takes approximately three days to complete a standard Bolga basket.

The name "Thailand" is associated with the dominant ethnic group, Thai. Thailand was never under European colonial rule. Military dictators ruled the nation until the early 1970s; the military remained a powerful force in national politics into the early 1990s. Since that time, its role has diminished, and a new constitution was adopted in 1997. The military governments after World War II promoted rapid economic development and attempted to assimilate ethnic minorities. Rapid economic growth continued until the late 1990s, when the economic boom of the early part of the decade came to an abrupt end. As part of a trend toward devolution of authority, the democratic governments of the 1990s adopted more liberal policies with regard to ethnic minorities. However, members of ethnic minorities continue to face many problems in regard to political rights and economic security.

Recyclable Wrapping

Our selection of beautiful, recycled fair trade Sari Scarves at Earth Lover Shopping makes excellent wraps for gifts and packages. The technique to wrap packages is known as furoshiki.

“For centuries, the furoshiki was truly an indispensable part of daily Japanese life. In Edo times, people would lay their futon on top of the furoshiki before going to sleep. Fires were extremely common back then, so when people had to get away in a hurry during the night, they only had to throw their belongings on top of the futon, wrap and tie the furoshiki, and leave through the nearest exit. Merchants usually carried their wares inside the furoshiki to transport just about anything you could imagine. When the furoshiki was not in use, people would fold it up like a handkerchief and put it away.” Tomen Journal

A basic technique to gift wrap with a scarf is to center your package in the middle part of your scarf. Pull up and tie ends catty-corner then tie with the other two directly on top of it. Tuck in the ends and you’re done! - a package beautifully tied and reusable.

RECYCLED SARI SCARVES, BLANKETS AND BAGS JUST ARRIVED!!

We just can't seem to put them up on the shelves, because the colors are so captivating laying here on the sorting table! These soft cotton scarves are are just yummy! We got them in yesterday, from a wonderful Non-Profit in Calcutta called Connexions. This group supports young women who are trying to remove themselves from the sex trade in Calcutta- by offering them training in sewing and working with fair trade standards, this opportunity is so wonderful for these young women who have no other way to care for themselves of family. And the products! They hand stitch these beautiful scarves from recycled cotton sari fabric, purchased locally, and then these fabrics become blankets, scarves and bags- they are soft, and worn, and the colors and texture is to die for! Each one is unique, and everyone is as beautiful as the next. Watch the store as we start to load up the images of the bags and blankets- you will be amazed! These make a wonderful gift- not only will you give a gift that is cherished, but you are giving back a gift to those so much less fortunate!

EARTHLOVER is reaching out to encourage our friends to send help to the victims of the earthquake in Haiti. We are supporting Doctors without Borders, but any charitable donation you choose to make to a support group is certainly appreciated. Doctors without Borders is currently treating people as supplies allow, and there is so much more to do- they are sending an "inflatable hospital" now, and your support translates immediately into medical supplies and care for the injured. I ADORE HALLOWEEN!

It was cold this morning. I know, this may seem to be a silly thing to announce, but when you have spent the summer picking the nats out of your ears and other orifices, it is a notable moment. The oppressive heat that creeps it's way into your pores here in south Georgia is something that cannot be properly described unless physically experienced. So it is with a deep sense of relief and joy that I announce this seemingly mundane fact that it is COLD this morning! And Halloween is around the corner, which only makes it better (pardon the pun). I just love Halloween! The costumes, the decorations...it is all so childlike and whimsical! So to the horror of my neighbors I will begin to carve my pumpkins and stretch cotton into spider webs, carefully contemplate what is the perfect goodie to give out, and fondly remember the days when my children were small and we spent hours creating costumes...the butterfly, the mummy...and I will always love the year my daughter was an M&M- big and round and silky yellow with her tummy wrapped in cotton batting 8 layers thick to fill the middle of her costume! SO adorable!

The Gift for the Guy...What is a Girl To Do??

I was listening to Ralphy May, the comedian, with my husband and son. He is funny, in a peculiar and rude way. The point here, and yes, there is a point, is he did a little spin on the gift a women should buy a guy. I will not go into his opinion on this, as this is a G rated Blog, but he DID say one thing that made me really think. He Said DON'T. He said we should just not buy them anything, because anything we buy them is not what they like and there is no way we are going to get it right. I hate that. I particularly hate it because it is probably true. But you know what, it is inevitable that we are going to try anyway, because women love to buy gifts (OK, women love to buy...) and we really do enjoy giving- we are just giving people. So as I purchased for Earthlover this season I really tried to think what would be the LEAST hated gift you could give a Guy! I know- LEAST HATED!! How sad! A few of the things I came up with I hope you will like. They are unique, and do not have to be worn to the Family Holiday gathering. Maybe that will help. I am still open to suggestions from anyone- please feel free. Maybe there are some guys out there reading?

So the front page of InStyle Magazine online fashion section is showing a great black tote bag for fall- Donna Karan, and no doubt it is fabulous. It is also $1495.00- so, what is the problem! should we get 2??? Earthlover is thinking NO- so here is our alternative. It is Fair Trade, and so chic! This great black and white tote is handmade by a wonderful co-op in India, supporting women (and we know how Earthlover LOVES that!) The founder of Godavari was one of the women who made lace in the community. She learned that if the women banded together in the community, they could form a cooperative, thus eliminating the middle man, alleviating poverty, and encouraging community togetherness. Through this cooperative, women have the means of becoming self-sufficient. This is especially valuable to widows and unmarried women who are much more vulnerable to destitution. Godavari currently works with 1,000 women in 30 different groups. As every order matters, Godavari strives to be innovative and in touch with the international trends. Godavari is sensitive to the needs of the community and is looking for more ways to bring hope to the poor in their area. Someday, they dream of having a community center with many different projects.

We love it, and apparently so does everyone else because we can barely get them here fast enough from Africa! This great diaper bag is an original from a group called Global Mommas. The women that make these great bags use the traditional skills of Batik (hand block, vegetable dye, on cotton fabric) and are offered an opportunity to build their own business, which in turn allows them independence and a way to offer education to their children. We just cannot think of a better way to have a great item for your new baby, while lending a hand to another Mom that might never have an opportunity to provide for her children without great programs like this.

The bags are so unique and practical, we have a feeling you might use it long after the baby has outgrown the diapers!
